We adore thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee,

THE VISION OF CONSTANTINE

INTRODUCTION

Throughout its first three centuries, the church went through unimaginable persecution from the Roman Empire, though all the time growing and spreading. So imagine what an extraordinary turn of events it was when the Roman Emperor himself became a Christian. Within one personā€™s lifetime, the Empire went from the most savage of its several persecutions of Christians to embracing Christianity.

The text tells the story of Emperor Constantineā€™s conversion, and a little of how his new faith was reflected in his imperial policy. In addition to what youā€™ll read below, he outlawed infanticide, the abuse of slaves and peasants, and crucifixion, and he made Sunday a day of rest.

This account is from a biography written by Eusebius, the Bishop of Caesarea in Palestine. He was a great historian, the first to make a significant contribution to church history, and his major work was The History of the Church which took him 25 years to prepare. He also knew Constantine personally, so in many ways it is a thoroughly reliable account.

Constantine was the son of Constantius, who had served as a Caesar (a junior emperor) of the Western Roman Empire under Maximian before succeeding Maximian as Augustus (senior emperor) in 305. Constantiusā€™ death in 306 sparked a conflict over who would succeed him. Though Constantine had the support of his fatherā€™s army, he allowed Severus, his fatherā€™s Caesar, to become Augustus.

Maxentius, the son of Maximian, was angered that he was passed over and declared himself Augustus. He defeated the Severus and Galerius, the Augustus of the East, in 306 and 307. In 311, Maxentius declared war on Constantine, the greatest threat to his power.

CONSTANTINE CHOOSES CHRISTIANITY

Because of the wicked magical enchantments so diligently practiced by the tyrant [Maxentius, who was in control of Rome], Constantine was convinced that he needed more powerful aid than his military forces could give him, so he sought the help of God. He believed arms and soldiery less important than the help of the power of the invincible and unshakeable God. So he considered which god he could rely on for protection and help. It occurred to him that, of the many emperors who had preceded him, those who had put their hope in a multitude of gods and served them with sacrifices and offerings had been deceived by flattering predictions and oracles promising prosperity and come to a bad end, without one of their gods warning them of the impending wrath of heaven. On the other hand, the one who alone had condemned their error, honoring the one Supreme God throughout his whole life [i.e. his father], had found him to be the Savior and Protector of his empire. Reflecting on thisā€¦, he decided it would be great folly to join in the idle worship of those who were no gods, and to err from the truth after such convincing evidence. For this reason he felt bound to honor his fatherā€™s God alone.

By 312, however, Constantine and Maxentius were engaged in open hostility with one another, although they were brothers-inā€‘law through Constantine’s marriage to Fausta, sister of Maxentius. In the spring of 312, Constantine gathered an army of 40,000 soldiers and decided to oust Maxentius himself. He easily overran northern Italy, winning two major battles: the first near Turin, the second at Verona, where the praetorian prefect Ruricius Pompeianus, Maxentius’ most senior general, was killed.

In the spring of 312, Constantine led his army toward Maxentius in in Rome. After routing Maxentiusā€™ forces in northern Italy, Constantine approached Rome in October.

CONSTANTINEā€™S VISION

Having a pious and religious Mother, St Helena, Constantine knew about God and Catholicism.

Accordingly Constantine called on God with earnest prayer to reveal to Him who He was, and stretch forth his right hand to help him in his present difficulties. And while he was thus praying with fervent entreaty, a most extraordinary sign appeared to him from heaven ā€“ something which it might have been hard to believe had the story been told by any other person. But since the victorious emperor himself long afterwards declared it to the writer of this history, when he was honored with his acquaintance and society, and confirmed his statement by an oath, who could hesitate to believe it, especially since other testimonies have established its truth? He said that about noon, when the day was already beginning to decline, he saw with his own eyes the sign of a cross of light in the heavens, above the sun, and bearing the inscription, ā€œBy this symbol you will conquer.ā€ He was struck with amazement by the sight, and his whole army witnessed the miracle.

CONSTANTINEā€™S DREAM

He said that he was unsure what this apparition could mean, but that while he continued to ponder, night suddenly came on. In his sleep, the Christ of God appeared to him with the same sign which he had seen in the heavens, and commanded him to make a likeness of that sign which he had seen in the heavens, and to use it as a safeguard in all engagements with his enemies.

When he looked up to the sun and saw a cross of light above it, and with it the Greek words “Ī•Ī½ Ī¤ĪæĻĻ„įæ³ ĪĪÆĪŗĪ±”, En toutō nĆ­ka, usually translated into Latin as “in hoc signo vinces”. The literal meaning of the phrase in Greek is “in this (sign), conquer” while in Latin it’s “in this sign, you shall conquer”; a more free translation would be “Through this sign [you shall] conquer”. At first he was unsure of the meaning of the apparition, but in the following night he had a dream in which Christ explained to him that he should use the sign against his enemies. Eusebius then continues to describe the labarum, the military standard used by Constantine in his later wars against Licinius, showing the Chi-Rho sign.

MAKING THE STANDARD OF THE CROSS

At the break of day he rose and told his friends about the marvel. Then he called together the workers in gold and precious stones, sat in the midst of them, and described to them the sign he had seen, telling them to represent it in gold and precious stones. And this representation I myself have had an opportunity of seeing.

WHAT THE STANDARD LOOKED LIKE

It was made in the following manner. A long spear overlaid with gold with a transverse bar laid over it formed the figure of the cross. A wreath of gold and precious stones was fixed to the top with the symbol of the Saviorā€™s name with in it ā€“ the first two [Greek] letters of Christā€™s name, the rho being intersected by chi in its centre. [These two letters look like X and P.] The Emperor took to wearing the two letters on his helmet at a later period. From the cross-bar of the spear was suspended a cloth, a royal piece, covered with a profuse embroidery of most brilliant precious stones; and being richly interlaced with gold it presented an indescribable beauty to the beholder. This banner was square, and the upright staff, whose lower section was of great length, bore a golden half-length portrait of the pious emperor and his children on its upper part, beneath the trophy of the cross, and immediately above the embroidered banner. The emperor constantly made use of this sign of salvation as a safeguard against every adverse and hostile power, and commanded that others similar to it should be carried at the head of all his armies.

EVENTS OF THE BATTLE

Constantine reached Rome at the end of October 312 approaching along the Via Flaminia. He camped at the location of Malborghetto near Prima Porta, where remains of a Constantinian monument, the Arch of Malborghetto, in honour of the occasion are still extant.

It was expected that Maxentius would remain within Rome and endure a siege; he had successfully employed this strategy twice before, during the invasions of Severus and Galerius. Indeed, Maxentius had organised the stockpiling of large amounts of food in the city in preparation for such an event. Surprisingly, he decided otherwise, choosing to meet Constantine in open battle. Ancient sources commenting on these events attribute this decision either to divine intervention (e.g. Lactantius, Eusebius) or superstition (e.g. Zosimus). They also note that the day of the battle was the same as the day of his accession (28 October), which was generally thought to be a good omen.

Accordingly, Maxentius is reported to have consulted the oracular Sibylline Books, which stated that “on October 28 an enemy of the Romans would perish”. Maxentius interpreted this prophecy as being favourable to himself. Lactantius also reports that the populace supported Constantine with acclamations during circus games.

The next day, 29 October the two armies clashed, and Constantine won a decisive victory. The dispositions of Maxentius may have been faulty as his troops seem to have been arrayed with the River Tiber too close to their rear, giving them little space to allow re-grouping in the event of their formations being forced to give ground. Already known as a skilful general, Constantine first launched his cavalry at the cavalry of Maxentius and broke them. Constantine’s infantry then advanced; most of Maxentius’s troops fought well but they began to be pushed back toward the Tiber. Maxentius then decided to order a retreat, intending to make another stand at Rome itself. However, there was only one escape route, via the bridge. Constantine’s men inflicted heavy losses on the retreating army.

Finally, the temporary bridge set up alongside the Milvian Bridge, over which many of the Maxentian troops were escaping, collapsed, and those stranded on the north bank of the Tiber were either taken prisoner or killed. Maxentius’ Praetorian Guard, who had originally acclaimed him emperor, seem to have made a stubborn stand on the northern bank of the river; “in despair of pardon they covered with their bodies the place which they had chosen for combat.”

Maxentius was among the dead, having drowned in the river while trying to swim across it in an attempt to escape or, alternatively, he is described as having been thrown by his horse into the river. Lactantius describes the death of Maxentius in the following manner: “The bridge in his rear was broken down. At sight of that the battle grew hotter. The hand of the Lord prevailed, and the forces of Maxentius were routed. He fled towards the broken bridge; but the multitude pressing on him, he was driven headlong into the Tiber.”

In the chaos of the retreat, the bridge collapsed, leaving only the too-narrow Milvian Bridge as a route to escape. Maxentius and many of his men would drown or be trampled to death in the escape. Constantine rode into Rome with the head of Maxentius.

ā€œThere, at around the age of twenty-four, Constantine was hailed as emperor, of the western half of the empire,ā€ writes historian Frank E. Smitha. ā€œHe was hailed as a man of boldness and a man favored and guided by the gods.ā€

CONSTANTINE AND CHRISTIANITY

Christians  in the Roman Empire had been persecuted by several Roman emperors in the first, second and third centuries, dating back to Nero in 64 A.D. In the early fourth century, Diocletian and Galerius made Christianity illegal, and called for the burning of churches and torture of Christians who refused to recant.

Constantineā€™s rise to power marks a turning point in the history of Christianity. ā€œConstantine can rightfully claim the title of Great, for he turned the history of the world into a new course and made Christianity, which until then had suffered bloody persecution, the religion of the State,ā€ said the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Constantine did not immediately make a full conversion to Christianity, however. He retained many of his pagan beliefs and customs, and the Arch of Constantine, which he commissioned to commemorate the Battle of Milvian Bridge, contained no references to Christianity. He also ordered the persecution of Christians who did not include the Old Testament in their beliefs.

He served as a patron for the church. He ordered the toleration of Christians in the Edict of Milan of 313. He also granted powers and funding to Christian bishops, allowing them to build churches, restore pilgrimage sites, and spread a unified belief structure.

In 325, Constantine hosted the Council of Nicea, the first ever Ecumenical council, to settle a dispute primarily between Alexander and Arius over whether Jesus was as divine as God. Constantine oversaw a compromise, called the Nicene Creed, that said Jesus was of the same substance as God.

ā€œThe emperor then exiled Arius, an act that, while manifesting a solidarity of church and state, underscored the importance of secular patronage in ecclesiastical affairs,ā€ according to Encyclopedia Britannica.

Christianity spread slowly over the next two centuries, as only one emperor (Julian in the 360s) tried prohibit it. ā€œBut there was no ā€˜triumph,ā€™ no one moment where Christians had visibly ā€˜wonā€™ some battle against pagans,ā€ writes Dr. Sophie Lunn-Rockliffe for the BBC. ā€œProgress was bitty, hesitant, geographically patchy.ā€ By the end of the fourth century, Christianity was the dominant religion in the Roman Empire.
